Marc Saint Brevin Les Pins Day 1

Even though we knew our ride would 'officially’ start in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins on the other side of the river, we stayed the night in Saint-Nazaire because that is where our train from Mont St. Michelle ended (and it was the only place we could get a hotel room for the night.) If you are starting in Saint-Nazaire, we recommend you do NOT try to ride across the Le pont de Saint-Nazaire bridge! It is a steep incline, with strong winds, and alot of traffic. Take bus 17 from Saint-Nazaire to Saint-Brevin-les-Pins across the “Le pont de Saint-Nazaire” bridge. Have your hotel call 24 hours in advance to make reservations, as the bus only has racks for about 6 bikes. (We were the only bike riders on the bus that morning, but it also lets the bus driver know he will need to carry his gloves to load the bikes on to the bus). Note: the bikes hang vertically off the back of the bus, so be sure you have removed anything that might fall off, i.e., front/rear lights, water bottles, all bags, etc.

We started the ride from Saint-Brevin-les-Pins in a light rain with a nice tail wind pushing us up the riverside path. The weather improved throughout the day and was warm and dry by the time we arrived in Nantes. We stayed with Warm Showers hosts Maxime “Max” and Florianne “Flo”.

Max and Flo were excellent hosts! They gave us great directions to find their place and met us on the street as we arrived. They offered us snacks and drinks, got us settled in a private room in their apartment, and pointed us towards an excellent pizza place nearby for dinner. This was our first night of a 16 day tour up the Loire river valley from Saint-Brevin-les-Pins to Nevers and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the trip!
