Marc powered hand ferry

Once again we started riding in a light drizzle. The highlight of the day's ride was the hand powered ferry across a small canal on the way out of Angers. When we arrived at the ferry, two maintenance men where untangling the chain from debris in the river bottom. Once free of the debris, they pulled the chain to bring the ferry to our bank of the canal. One of the guys held the ferry to the bank while we loaded up the bikes and then we were off. Marc pulled on the chain connected to the far bank and we made our way across the canal.

The weather improved throughout the day and we arrived at Saumur in bright sunshine, passing several wineries and tastings along the road into town. We had made a hotel reservation the night before and we were able to bike straight to our hotel for the night. Julia requested a day off due to an increasing bout of bronchitis so we booked into the hotel for two nights. After checking in and cleaning up we headed to Musée de la Cavalerie (N47.26190° W0.08270°). After the museum we wandered old town Saumur and Chateau. The concierge recommended “Le Grand Bleu”  restaurant for dinner (N47.25955° W0.07574°).  Excellent food!

So this is how we get to the other side...

Biking the Loire

Can you say scenic ride? Sometimes it just doesn’t seem real.
