Troglodyte dwellings

Marc in Troglodyte dwelling

We departed Saumur along the Bords de Loire to avoid the big hill behind the chateau. The bike path wound along the Loire river then up through some troglodyte dwellings in the bluffs (N47.23691° W0.01032°). Do not miss the chance to visit these caves! We read nothing about them prior to our arrival and the brochures in town go to a touristy site that would require biking up the big hill behind the chateau. Fortunately, the marked cycleway heads right through the caves and emerges on the top of the bluff amongst the vineyards. We had a nice lunch, with wine of course, along the banks of the river.

Marc in Chinon

After lunch we turned away from the Loire towards Chinon. We stopped to tour the Forteresse Royale de Chinon; King Arthur may have ruled from here in the 10th century. There is an elevator, approved for bicycles, from town up to Chinon fortress, which was a much welcomed surprise on a hot afternoon. From Chinon we biked back up and over to the Loire valley toward Usse.

We stayed at a nice little campground near Château d’Ussé and found a nice little restaurant, Le Clos de Ussé, for dinner. The mosquitoes came out at dusk and forced us into the tent; however, since sunset was around 9:30 pm and it is still light at 10:30 pm, “dusk” wasn’t too early for bed.
